Awards for Emerging Biotech Leaders
In November 2018, the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation kicked off its Biotech Initiative with an awards ceremony in Kyiv, honoring 24 young scientists in Ukraine. Cash and travel grants totaling almost $60,000 were given out.

Diana has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in applied physics from the National Aviation University in Kyiv, and a PhD from Manchester University (UK). She has more than 60 publications in international and national scientific journals, and contributed to two textbooks on biomedical engineering and biophysics. Her current research focuses on graphene nanosensors in the biotech area, optical and electronic properties of graphene, nanoplasmonic phenomena, and fabrication of nanoscale electro-optical modulators based on graphene, related materials and heterostructures, electro-optical measurements and research in photonics and optoelectronics of low dimensional systems.

My research line is with forest biotechnology, particularly the micropropagation of forest tree species, getting them to be pathogen-free, improving plants to create economically and ecologically sustainable forests. I study morphogenesis in vitro and the main approaches for cloning plants by direct and indirect ways. Nowadays, I study morphogenesis in vitro of ancient forest trees, as a way of preservation and propagation of unique genotypes, studying their anatomical and microbiological features.

She took part in the Skin Bank project and the development of 3D-tissue engineered bone equivalent (3D-TEBE).

“Biotechnology of Medicinal Mushroom Cultivation on the Wastes of Cereals Processing”

My work was dedicated to the research of biotechnological process of medicinal mushroom cultivation on liquid nutrient media with wastes of plant processing, biochemical composition of initial substrates and obtaining biomass with biologically active substances for creation of dietary substances and functional foods.
In 2018 I received: Kyiv City Mayor's Award for scientific achievements of young people in the development of the capital of Ukraine – Hero City Kyiv; NAS of Ukraine Scholarship for talented young scientists performing advanced research on the most important problems of natural sciences; Diploma of the Department of the General Biology, NAS of Ukraine for long-standing dedicated conscientious work, great professionalism, labor achievements, active participation in public life and on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Currently I am taking a part in the project of biogas production on the wastes of distilleries. Biogas technologies are consistent with the principles of sustainable development, since they return the organic substance to the agro-industrial cycle, turning it from the category of waste into the category of fertilizers, reduce the emissions of green-house gases and produce biogas that is an essential renewable energy source.

National Institute of Grape and Wine "Magarach" (Microbiology department) of Yalta Olga is a scientific researcher in the fields of microbial ecology and medical biotechnology at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine. She has a master’s degree from the National University of Food Technologies of Kyiv, and PhD from the National Institute of Grape and Wine "Magarach" (Microbiology department) of Yalta. Olga’s main object of research is multimicrobial symbiotic association called kombucha or tea mushroom, that consists of different yeasts, cellulose forming and other bacteria. She also took part in the international BIOMEX (Biology and Mars experiments) project and is participating on patenting a new medical device - Hydrogeleous materials based on nanocellulose of bacteria for treatment of wounds.

National Institute of Grape and Wine "Magarach" (Microbiology department) of Yalta Olga is a scientific researcher in the fields of microbial ecology and medical biotechnology at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine. She has a master’s degree from the National University of Food Technologies of Kyiv, and PhD from the National Institute of Grape and Wine "Magarach" (Microbiology department) of Yalta. Olga’s main object of research is multimicrobial symbiotic association called kombucha or tea mushroom, that consists of different yeasts, cellulose forming and other bacteria. She also took part in the international BIOMEX (Biology and Mars experiments) project and is participating on patenting a new medical device - Hydrogeleous materials based on nanocellulose of bacteria for treatment of wounds.

My team focuses on stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Thus, the potential clinical applications play a crucial role in our approaches. Adipose-derived stem cells are the main object of our interest due to their multipotent properties suitable for tissue engineering and regenerative medical applications.
2008-2014 years I worked as a junior researcher in the Gene Technologies Department Gene Cellular Modification Laboratory, State Institute of Genetic and Regenerative Medicine, Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv. Focused on allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. The role and basic knowledge of foreign cells and DNA and their detection in the host organism after transplantation and during and after pregnancy is the subject of the research.
Since 2015 am a researcher in the Cell and Tissue Technologies Department, Laboratory of Cell and Tissue Cultures. At the beginning, the project connected with modeling of surgically induced endometriosis in mice by auto-transplantation of uterine tissue. The main interest focused on the role of allogeneic PBMC and Lactobacillus in endometriosis. Our current project is based on safety and functional efficacy of adipose-derived stem cell using ovariectomized murine model. This research will suggest the preclinical model of human menopause using ovariectomized animals to determine adipose-derived stem cells in clinical application (aesthetic surgery, regenerative medicine etc.).

I am a co-author of the winter triticale variety “Myrolan” and co-author of the patent on the utility model № 125692 “Method of in vitro selection of salt-tolerant genotypes of winter triticale.” My work is devoted to the development of in vitro technique of obtaining cereal crop plants with increased tolerance to abiotic stressors as well as studying stress-induced genome variation during selection of resistant forms. The priority areas of my research are the using of cellular and molecular biotechnologies to accelerate the breeding of grain crops and to study the molecular genetic mechanisms of their resistance to abiotic stresses.

I have been working on genetic and metabolic engineering of yeasts for the last 10 years. The main topics of my research activities are bioethanol and glycerol production by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae; conversion of xylose and crude glycerol into ethanol by yeasts Scheffersomyces stipitis, Ogataea polymorpha and Komagataella phaffii etc. The results of my work were presented at many international conferences as well as in 8 research articles, 2 Ukrainian patents and international patent applications. During three months I carried out research work in the Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology of Rzeszow University (Poland) in frame of a FEMS research fellowship. Also I worked for three months in the Department of Microbiology at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in frame of VISBY project and for two months in King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand. My scientific research is associated with alternative energy sources, in particular biofuels – bioobutanol. I took an active part as a performer of the research work of the Institute, among which ‘Development of scientific principles of biotechnology of essential amino acids. Creation of genetically modified (GM) strain of lysine producer’, ‘"Creation of effective strains of butanol producing, capable of fermenting bio-raw materials with high output of the target product.’ I take an active part as the main performer in the work on "Improving the technology of bioobutanol using alternative substrates and domestic strains of producers", "Investigating the processes of bioconversion of lignocellulosic raw materials into monosaccharide by microbial transformation". In the course of research, I conducted the isolation, screening and selection of new strains producing butanol of the genus Clostridium, identified their biological characteristics, carried out the identification and phylogenetic analysis of the strain. I own modern methods of physico-chemical, microbiological, biochemical and instrumental research. I participated in a number of international and national conferences, in particular, the 15th International European Biotechnology Congress "New Biotechnology" (Istanbul, Turkey, 2012), the International Congress "Biotechnology: the state and prospects of development" (m. Moscow, Russia, 2013), the international scientific conference "Biological Resources and New Biotechnologies for Biofuels Production" (Kyiv, Ukraine, 2014). I have published 48 scientific papers, including 24 articles in professional scientific journals. In 2015 I won an annual Award competition for the Parliament of Ukraine most talented young scientists in basic and applied research and scientific and technological development.

I am the author of the invention of using a fermenter with a vortex aeration system for the biosynthesis of microbial fermentation products, which allowed to solve the problem of fermentation of producers with active foam formation.
Since 2006 I have been working in PrJSC “Enzym Company”, a leading biotechnology company in Ukraine, which is engaged in the production of yeast and products based on them. Since 2013 I hold the position of Chief Technologist. As a member of R&D group, I lead the technological direction of the company's development with the launch of new biotechnological products for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Currently I am working on development and implementation of technology for the production of natural, environmentally friendly food additives and seasoning based on yeast extracts to replace sodium glutamate. This production will be the first in Ukraine to produce of such products.
In 2016-2018 I took part in the cooperation of Enzym Company with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) within the Enterprise Growth Programme. The main objectives of this project are designing, developing and introducing new biotechnological products, energy efficiency and environmental safety.
Since 2016 I am a technology consultant biotechnological company “Biotensidon GmbH” (Germany), which is engaged in the development and production of new environmentally friendly means of environmental protection. In 2018 I am one of the co-initiators of the Lviv biotechnology cluster “Biotech&Pharma” the main task of which is to unite the efforts of business, education, and municipal authorities in the field of biotechnology development.

Mykhailo Zhybak has over 10 years of experience in various areas of R&D activity, such as Analytical Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biosensors, Material Science, Molecular Biotechnology and Genetics. His scientific papers are published in highly impacted journals, including Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Microchimica Acta, Electroanalysis. Mykhailo Zhybak is a regular reviewer in the Microchimica Acta journal.
He was awarded a grant for the young scientists by National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2013-2014); and also was a collaborator in numerous national and international (NATO Science for Peace Program (CBP.NUKR.SFPP 984173, “TOXIC IONS DETECTION”) and FP7 Program (PIRSES-GA-2012-318053, Acronym “SMARTCANCERSENS”)) interdisciplinary projects.
