iCardy - detecting atrial fibrillation in real-time
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide, resulting in more than 17 million deaths annually (31%). This figure is expected to increase to 23 million by 2030.
In Ukraine, more than half of stokes and ischemic heart diseases could be prevented if patients were monitored at least once every six months. But long wait times and cumbersome devices that have to be worn for several days leave many people unwilling to undergo testing.
Researchers at the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" (NTU KhPI) realized there had to be a better way. Shouldn't tests to check for heart conditions be as quick and easy as ordering a pizza?
To solve this problem, they developed a unique algorithm for processing ECGs to detect atrial fibrillation in real-time and built a model of communication between doctors and patients. Now a patient can undergo real-time heart monitoring and receive assistance from a physician online.
This was the first step in turning their research project into a business idea.
In the past year and a half the iCardy team has graduated from 4 business incubators, conducted customer discovery with more than 100 physicians, designed ten prototypes of cardiac monitoring devices, and created a unique business model for the Ukrainian market - the first medical service that unites patient + heart monitoring device + professional heart monitoring service.
Today iCardy is working hard on promoting the idea that you should take your health seriously. Everybody knows that eating healthy, being activity and getting enough sleep is important, but so is taking care of your heart.
And their hard work is starting to pay off.
In November, iCardy won second place and a pre-seed grant of $25,000 during the Ukrainian Startup Fund's 17th Pitch Day. They plan to use this money to launch their service in Ukraine and test their business hypotheses.
